Marie - Lasting memory

Late one night, BHS Scotland development officer, Helene Mauchlen, received an email all the way from Alaska. Sadly, the sender’s sister, Marie, who lived in the UK, had terminal cancer. Every night Marie would invent the adventures of a special shire horse and share the stories with her daughters, aged only seven and four, as a way of explaining her illness.

When Marie lost her fight for life, her sister thought that a special way for the girls to remember their mother would be to meet a real life shire horse.

The BHS was able to organise a special day out at a local Clydesdale horse stud for the young girls to meet, groom and look after a group of shire horses.

A donation of just £3 per month by direct debit to the BHS will help the BHS Welfare's national network of volunteer welfare officers to offer assistance like this: click here to donate now...
